MOONWOOD – Sydney Lights

Artist: MOONWOOD

Song: Sydney Lights

Genres: #indierock #alternativerock

Location: Sydney, Australia

Influences: U2, The 1975, Kings of Leon

Release date: November, 2021

CommentSydney Lights is a beautiful love song to MOONWOOD‘s hometown, as the lockdown made the band members, even those not originally from there, fall in love with Sydney all over again. The five-piece band started in 2016 and as you can notice here, they clearly know what they’re doing. Sydney Lights got a clean delivery with dreamy guitars that set the right vibe and great vocals from lead singer, Jake. If you are looking for quality alternative rock, you can stop looking right now. Their previous tracks are really outstanding as well.

Eliza & the Bear – Friends

Artist: Eliza & the Bear

Song: Friends

Genres: #indierock #alternativerock

Location: London, United Kingdom

Release date: February, 2016

Comment: I’m excited to see this little British band tomorrow as I haven’t attended a live rock concert in a long, long time (and it sounds like it might be the only one in a while too). Named after the title of a collection of poems by Eleanor Rees, Eliza & the Bear are not well-known to the casual music fan but if there is one song of theirs that even them are likely to have heard before is Friends, which became an indie hit when it was released five years ago. Other songs I would recommend are Cruel and I’m On Your Side.

As this week’s #ThrowbackThursday, let’s honor Eliza & the Bear.

Broken Clouds – Eyes Shut

Artist: Broken Clouds

Song: Eyes Shut

Genres: #garagerock #alternativerock

Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Release date: November, 2021

CommentEyes Shut is the debut single from Broken Clouds, the stage name of Scottish musician Gareth John Anderson, and if it is an indication of how good his other tracks are, we’re in for a treat. The guitar-driven track has a really infectious chorus and a sophisticated sound that still manages to evoke alternative rock from the eighties and nineties. Eyes Shut was produced by Rod Jones (Idlewild‘s guitarist/songwriter) at Edinburgh’s Post Electric Studio, and released on Edinburgh independent label Cosmic Peace Jazz.

Of Monsters and Men – Organs

Artist: Of Monsters and Men

Song: Organs

Genres: #indierock #alternativerock

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland

Release date: June, 2015

Comment: I mentioned Of Monsters and Men in yesterday’s entry and then in the comments section I said that I loved lead singer’s Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir’s voice. If the only songs you know of this quintessential indie band are their biggest hits (Little Talks or Mountain Sound), you might not be aware of her sweet and mildly raspy voice. Both songs are great but do not showcase Nanna’s vocals that much. Instead, listen to Organs, an underrated gem that wasn’t even a single off the band’s sophomore album. It’s all about Nanna and her flawless vocal delivery. Enjoy! #ThrowbackThursday

Weekend Punks – The Theme from Weekend Punks

Artist: Weekend Punks

Song: The Theme from Weekend Punks

Genres: #surfpop #indierock

Location:  Southampton, United Kingdom

Release date: November, 2021

Comment: This song is part of a 3-track EP that was written between Southampton (UK) and Reykjavik (Iceland), so I don’t think it is simply a coincidence that Weekend Punks remind me a bit of Icelandic band Of Monsters And Men. Weekend Punks claim to play Surf Pop with relatively little experience of surf or sun. I think their style is actually some kind of chilled back punk mixed with shoegaze pop and 90s rock vibes. The glue that holds everything together is the lead singer’s magnetic vocals. The Theme from Weekend Punks is the band’s second single and a good example of this very interesting proposition. Check it out!

Simple Plan – The Antidote

Artist: Simple Plan

Song: The Antidote

Genres:  #poppunk #punkrock

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Release date: November, 2021.

Comment: I don’t think Antidote is the best song Simple Plan has ever released, not even close, but it is nevertheless a heck of a good song that remind us that these Canadian rockers still got it. Believe it or not, their debut album No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls is going to be 20 in March. Anyway, Simple Plan wrote Antidote during the pandemic and hopefully it is an indication of how their next album is going to sound like.

MUNA feat. Phoebe Bridgers – Silk Chiffon

MUNA feat. Phoebe Bridgers

Artist: MUNA

Song: Silk Chiffon

Genres: #altpop #indiepop

Location:  California, United States

Release date: November, 2021

Comment: I’m glad Phoebe Bridgers collaborated with MUNA on this great tune because I would probably have missed it otherwise, as I wasn’t aware of that music trio until now. Silk Chiffon is a catchy indie pop song with a nice 90s rock vibe, particularly during the intro. It might not be a groundbreaking track but it is deeply enjoyable. At the end of the day, that’s really what matters.

The Break Plans – Sad Sometimes

Artist: The Break Plans

Song: Sad Sometimes

Genres: #altpop #indiepop

Location:  New Jersey, United States

Release date: November, 2021

Comment: Last December, New Jersey band The Break Plans was featured here with their catchy single Crossroads. They’re back now with an introspective song about battling your own demons and the fact that it is absolutely OK to feel sad from time to time. It is the first track self-produced by them and even though Sad Sometimes got a slightly different vibe to their previous songs, it still manages to keep The Break Plans‘ essence intact. Writing honest and authentic songs is always the way to go, even if that means getting out of your comfort zone. I got no doubt The Break Plans are headed in the right direction.

The Maine – Face Towards The Sun

The Maine - Face Towards The Sun

Artist: The Maine

Song: Face Towards The Sun

Genres:  #poppunk #alternativerock

Location: Arizona, United States

Release date: July, 2021.

CommentThe Maine is a pretty consistent band from Arizona that always delivers a few gems per album, such as Face Towards The Sun, which is part of their latest record: XOXO: From Love and Anxiety in Real Time. It is not one of the lead singles but it will surely become a fan favorite because it got a great melody and an effervescent chorus, despite the less than optimistic lyrics. Overall, it is another great song from The Maine.

Kanadia – Big Nothing

Artist: Kanadia

Song: Big Nothing

Genres: #indierock #alternativerock

Location: Oxford, United Kingdom

Release date: August, 2021

Influences: Radiohead, Muse, KingsOfLeon

CommentBig Nothing is quite something. If you like any of the bands mentioned above, stop what you’re doing and listen to this track right now. It is part of an eponymous EP 4-piece alternative rock band Kanadia released in August with four tracks that will be part of their upcoming sophomore album. Big Nothing is a powerful song about the struggles musicians face while trying to make it in that difficult industry. When you listen to it, you can tell this Oxford-based band is going places. They also sound great live, as evidenced by the video below with a live version of this memorable track. Keep an eye on them!
